Local Newspapers Can Survive with Adoption of Interactive Products
Verican’s Email Edition Extends Newspapers’ Reach to Readers’ Inboxes
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (March 12, 2009) – Lately, newspapers have been obsessed with reporting their own downward spirals. You can’t skim the morning headlines without reading about another top-tier newspaper that is filing for bankruptcy or laying off half of the newsroom.
But what about smaller community papers What’s the strategy for the survival of the newspapers that serve our communities
The Email Edition, a product offered by Verican, has proved a success for The Victorville Daily Press, a 44,000–circulation newspaper out of San Bernardino County.
The Email Edition earns The Daily Press additional advertising revenue, above and beyond the advertising revenue from its print edition or website.
The Daily Press used to send out breaking news emails, but they were irregularly produced and only had space for one advertiser.
When the paper launched Verican’s Email Edition, it used its breaking news subscriber list and emails collected from its classifieds database (a Verican product called Classifieds Order Entry) to immediately reach 10,000 people daily.
“I was impressed with how quickly we could launch this new product. We sent out our first edition in less than 24 hours,” recollects Stephan Wingert, the publisher of The Daily Press.
Wingert also likes how easy it is to use Verican’s Email Edition. “Now, we deliver a morning edition to 10,000 readers. And we don’t have to do anything more than what we were already doing. The interface is easy to use and it is easy to prove to the advertisers that people are clicking on their ads.”
The Email Edition has become an additional revenue generating product for the Victorville paper. “The Email Edition has given us more advertising opportunities,” Wingert explains. “It’s a consistently scheduled, attractive email product that is much easier to sell than irregular breaking news.”
